Featured Artist - Vicki Starr

Makeup Artist Vicki Starr prefers Mehron Beauty Makeup
Mom's in the shower, now is the perfect time for a seven year old girl to sneak into her Mother's room, quickly uncap the blush, scrape some into a bottle cap that doubled as her makeup mixer, smooth the blush back to hide the fact that some was missing and await her turn in the bathroom. Once inside the bathroom, the seven year old creator mixes the "borrowed" blush with just enough Vaseline to create a glossy colored home made lip gloss. Covering her newly manufactured Lip Gloss with a saved piece of aluminum foil, she retreats to the sanctuary of her room and secrets it away in her coat pocket for transportation to school the next day. When the morning comes and the seven year old Makeup Manufacturer is safely in the confines of the school yard, she reaches into her pocket, uncovers her personally made lip gloss and gingerly applies it using the school door glass as her makeup mirror.

For a while the plan works perfectly, until........Teacher meets the Mom and mentions that she is the only seven year old who comes to first grade with Lip Makeup. The Mother is confused at this revelation by the teacher as she knows that not only doesn't her daughter have any makeup, she is also forbidden to wear it. As the daughter reveals the plot to her Mother, a Mother realizes the that her daughter has a drive and talent that shouldn't really be punished. With a beginning like this you would think that the Seven Year Old would grow up wanting a career in Makeup, it would come, just not right away.

The Seven Year Old had dreams of being a singer, not a Makeup Artist as one would imagine. A classically trained pianist from a musically inclined family, the first career for Vicki Starr was as a singer. Not thrilled with the Makeup that the Makeup Artists assigned to her Performances would do for her, Vicki began tinkering with her own Makeup until she perfected the look that she wanted. Vicki recently explained to the Mehron Blog, "Dreams of being a Makeup Artist came later on as a result of bad makeup that was put on me by others who didn't know how to deal with my complexion so I ended up doing it myself. Everyone loved my "revised" makeup job, the Makeup Artist would get the credit for it. I had to change that."

With a musical career to fall back on, Vicki Starr became a self taught Makeup Artist who has set her sights on an Academy Award for Makeup. Loving it all is how Ms. Star explains which Makeup Specialty she prefers, with a goal of learning Special Effects Makeup for Movies and Stage Productions. Vicki is fond of Face Painting Makeup and Body Painting Makeup admiring the Makeup used by CIRQUE DU SOLEIL and hoping to soon work for a production that will afford her the creative freedom to show her stuff with Mehron Makeup. Vicki Star discovered Mehron Makeup as many other Freelance Makeup Artists do, through the Internet and by attending the New York Makeup Show, where she first purchased Mehron Makeup. What does Freelance Makeup Artist Vicki Starr say about using Mehron Makeup? "I LOVE the intensity of their colors and how they blend together when I am trying to achieve a certain effect. I also love that fact the cleanup is as easy as washing it off with soap and water. That is always a plus for my clients...".

Along with her talents on the piano, her signing and her Freelance Makeup Artist Career, Ms. Starr is also the Beauty Editor for MODELOCITY ONLINE MAGAZINE. You would think that Vicki would never have a dull moment to experience boredom, you would be wrong. Ms. Starr has developed her own style of Makeup Application, Hand Painting. Vicki uses Mehron Face Painting Makeup and Body Painting Makeup as Hand Painting Makeup, she creates the most amazingly realistic looking hand animals using the natural contours of the hand and her vivid imagination. How did Vicki Starr learn how to create Hand Painting animals? "I was bored one day and wanted to challenge myself. I had seen them done before but never thought I could do it. Once I did the first one and showed it to my children, their reaction and excitement made me want to do more. I just kept going until I tired myself out. That was when I knew I was more talented that I once thought. My parents were right....they would say, if I put my mind to it I could achieve anything I wanted."

Talented she is, along with the most beautiful Hand Painting Animals, Ms. Starr has become an expert Beauty Makeup Artist, a Body Painting Makeup Artist and a student of FX Makeup Applications. Keep your eyes on the Star, Vicki Starr, as her makeup career blossoms. she will surely find a place for all the Mehron Makeup Products in her makeup case.

Heath Ledger Wins Golden Globe

Heath Ledger in Joker MakeupThe Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor was posthumously awarded to Heath Ledger for his portrayal of The Joker in The Dark Knight. Before his untimely death, Mr. Ledger was quoted as saying that playing The Joker with his makeup and maniacal laugh was the most fun he had ever had with a character. The Director of The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan accept the award for Heath Ledger to a standing ovation from the Golden Globe audience.

Mr. Ledger considered The Joker Makeup to be a punked out clown. As he completed his Joker Makeup each day while filming The Dark Knight, Heath told acquaintances that the Makeup drove him deeper into the mind of The Joker Character. Although a spectacular Actor, Mr. Ledger's comments during the filming of The Dark Knight reminds audiences of the importance of Character Makeup even to the most accomplished Actors and Actresses in being able to immerse themselves in the Character that they are portraying.

Professional Performance Makeup is an important aspect of a Performers ability to immerse themselves in the feelings of their characters. Just as audiences come to believe in the characters they are seeing on Stage and Screen, the actors and actresses also are able to delve into the minds and feelings of their character. If you read the comments and interviews that Mr. Ledger made during the filming of The Dark Knight it becomes abundantly clear that the actor's ability to feel and think like the character they are portraying is enhanced by the Professional Character Makeup that they are wearing. To the average person in the viewing audience the Makeup Artist is just a name in the list of credits at the end of the film or in the Playbill, but to an Actor or Actress the Makeup Artist is a very important part of their performance.

Many unheralded people go into making the finished theatrical production that audiences see, one of the most important people to an actor or actress on set is the Makeup Artist. The Makeup Artist often spends many hours alone with an Actress or Actor as they prepare them for each day's shooting schedule, or in the case of live theater for each day's performance. For the Makeup Artist, the Makeup they use is of the utmost importance to them. As the Makeup Artist transforms the outward appearance of the Actor or Actress they are working on, the performer is transforming their thoughts and feelings into the character that they will portray. The Makeup Artist was obviously a very important person to Mr. Ledger in his final role as The Joker, as he told friends that he would begin to transform into The Joker while in the Joker Makeup.
