The Thanksgiving Day Parade

Thanksgiving Day Parade Clowns
With New York City being one of the largest media markets in the world, The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade receives worldwide coverage and is seen as The Thanksgiving Day Parade. It is not however the oldest Thanksgiving Day Parade. The Oldest Thanksgiving Day Parade in the USA is in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, originally sponsored by by Macy's arch rival in the retail department store business, Gimbels. Sponsored by Gimbels and known as the Gimbels Day Thanksgiving Day Parade until 1986, the traditional continues under a new name. The Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade is now sponsored by 6abc, a local television outlet and IKEA, a destination specialty store. Tied with the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade for the second oldest Thanksgiving Day Parade in the USA is America's Thanksgiving Day Parade held in Detroit, MI and begun in 1924 by the J.L.Hudson Company Department Store.

All three of these traditional American Thanksgiving Day Parades began only years before the foundation of America's Makeup Company, Mehron Makeup in 1927. In 2010, as the tradition of the Thanksgiving Day Parade continues in Detroit, New York and Philadelphia for over eighty years, Mehron Makeup is still a part of this American Tradition. All three of the oldest Thanksgiving Day Parades feature bands, floats, balloons, clowns and entertainment stars. Since 1927 the Clowns of the Thanksgiving Day Parades have counted on Mehron Clown Makeup to keep their makeup fresh from the first step to the last step of each of these Thanksgiving Day Parades. The Clowns for Thanksgiving Day Parades arrive early to apply their Clown Makeup and need it t last no matter what the weather conditions. White Face Clowns, Auguste Clowns and Hobo Clowns all know that Mehron Clown Makeup will look the same at the end of the parade as it did in the beginning.

As the stars of Broadway began to participate in the Thanksgiving Day Parades, Mehron Theatrical Makeup also began playing a starring role along the Thanksgiving Day Parade Routes. Durable, long lasting, cake free Professional Theatrical Makeup continues to be the Makeup of choice for the Entertainment Community that participates in this great American Thanksgiving Tradition. With Singers and Dancers becoming a bigger part of the Thanksgiving Day Parade line of march, Mehron Dancer's Makeup is there for them. When the characters of film and television join the parade, Mehron Character Makeup, Studio and Stage Makeup and Body Painting Makeup are all available to them, allowing them to keep their look from start to finish.

As Face Painters join the clowns in entertaining the young and young at heart, Mehron Face Painting Makeup has joined the other Mehron Makeup Collections in the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Professional Face Painting Makeup Artists know that Mehron Face Painting Makeup offer them a quick, easy, true color application, that will not run, crack or smear in on the coldest of Thanksgiving Day Parade Days.

Throughout the decades, the Thanksgiving Day Parades have grown in size, and variety, one thing has remained the same, Mehron Makeup has been there as a tool for the Clowns, Performers and the Audience to bring true lively durable color to the festivities of the Thanksgiving Tradition of these and all American Thanksgiving Day Parades. The final Star of each of these iconic Thanksgiving Day Parades is Santa Claus, who can count on Mehron Makeup Hair White to make his white hair a pure consistent white and Mehron Face Painting Makeup to maintain his rich rosy cheeks on a cold or warm day. Veterans Day

In honor of the Veterans of all Wars everywhere The Mehron Blog looks back on a Blog Post from Veterans Day 2009. Originally published on November 11, 2009, here is:

Makeup Artists and Veterans

During World War II wounded Veterans were returning to the United States in record numbers, many with catastrophic injuries that required multiple surgeries with extensive recuperation periods. Others were left with physical scars as well as the emotional scars associated with disfigurement. The Medical Staffs of the Veteran Hospitals were pulling triple shifts just to keep up with the incoming flow of patients that continued to arrive by the plane load from the war theaters in Europe, Africa and Japan. As the war continued Veterans Hospitals counted on Volunteers more and more to tend to the non-medical needs of the patients, of course in the United States as in the rest of the World, the civilian population responded and volunteered to help in whatever way they could with whatever skills they had to offer to ease the pain of the wounded military personnel. Volunteers responded by reading to and writing for the wounded who were unable to read or write because of their injuries, a vital necessity for the wounded to keep in touch with their families. Volunteers helped in any way they could to ease the healing process for the injured returning Veterans.

The Medical Staffs of the Veterans Hospitals were using the best medical techniques that they could to heal the wounded in their care. The physical challenges were significant enough, unfortunately they were not the only challenges in restoring the wounded to health. The returning Veterans whether injured or not were retuning home with the mental scars from the savageries that they encountered in war. The injured Veterans also had the burden of physiological and psychological scars. The Medical Staff constantly under pressure with the sheer volume of injuries did not always have the appropriate time to help the permanently scarred and physically disfigured with their transition back into society. Psychologist and Psychiatrists were at a premium in the Veterans Health System with the enormous volume of injured soldiers whose physical injuries often led to psychological trauma at the sight of their own faces that were disfigured by their wounds.

Everyone on the home front helped in any way they could. The Entertainment Industry became the morale of the troops through the USO which brought entertainment and a taste of home to military personal both home and abroad. The stars of the era used their skills as entertainers and performers to bring a semblance of sanity to a world that was engulfed in the insanity of war. All the Professions and Craftsmen that comprise the Entertainment Industry were utilized to bring entertainment to those that were serving and those that were recovering at home. The Directors, Producers, Choreographers, Musicians, Cameramen, Sound Technicians, and Set Builders all pitched in to bring the best that Hollywood and Broadway had to offer to the troops around the world.

Back home a special skill set that evolved out of the Entertainment Industry became a vital skill in helping to ease the psychically dismembered and psychologically scarred that were recuperating at the Veterans Hospitals around the world. Men like Mehron Melik, who were on the cutting edge of the Makeup Industry saw the opportunity to use their skills. Mehron packed his bag of Makeup and spent his days at Veterans Hospitals on the East Coast showing disfigured Veterans how to use cosmetics to cover the scars and disfigurements that they so detested. One of the magic skills of the Entertainment Industry, Makeup, soon took on a new life at the Veterans Hospitals around the World. The injured and disabled learned from men like Mehron how to apply Makeup to cover the physical ravages of war which in turn gave these Veterans the morale boost they needed to get out and reenter society. Mehron used his Makeup to encourage injured men who didn't want their family to see them, the courage to see them again. Those whose disfigurements would be erased by multiple plastic surgeries were taught to apply Makeup in between surgeries as a transitional tool. Mr. Melik spent years visiting Veterans Hospitals donating his time, skill and Makeup in service to the injured who served their Country.

World War II seems like an eternity to most of us alive today as the last of this Generation is being lost to time, but the lessons remain. Mehron Melik was a forefather of the Makeup Industry that now dominates the Entertainment Industry, he was there through the days of Vaudeville, Burlesque, Silent Films, Talking Films, Technicolor, Television, Color Television and Music Videos. He founded a company by hand making Makeup, and he used those hands to help those in need of his expertise. Mr. Mehron Melik is an example of the unselfish sharing of his skills.

Makeup Artists around the world who wonder what you can contribute when called upon, the answer is easy! Your skill, your artistry, your magical touch are what you can contribute, not only to those injured in war, but also to those touched by tragedy and accidents. The artistry that lies in your hands can change the day for a wounded Veteran, a child disfigured by accident or a warrior battling cancer. The gift in your hands, your ability to envision, your command of texture and color can change a person's life, turning a dreaded day into new beginning. The tools that you use every day to enhance beauty, design body art, create characters, and magically transform one look to another are the tools that are needed to change another person's life in a time of need.

Note to Veterans and Their Families: Mehron Makeup was founded in 1927 and has continuously operated since then, due to corporate moves and damaged archives, Mehron Makeup no longer has any photographic records of Mehron Melik at Veterans Hospitals. If any Veteran or Veteran's Family has any photograph of Mehron Melik working with wounded Veterans, Mehron would like to rebuild the Company Archives and ask that you would consider sharing these photographs with the world through Mehron. As the Greatest Generation leaves us behind, many families will be cleaning out buried treasures stored away by parents and grandparents. If you should come upon any correspondence or photograph referencing the work of Mehron Melik or any Makeup Artist with Veterans, please consider preserving that history by sharing it with the Mehron Archives. Many prominent Makeup Artists volunteered at Veterans Hospitals using their skills in the same way that Mr. Melik used his. We know that Jack Dawn, the Makeup Artist for the Wizard of Oz, and a fixture at the MGM Makeup Department spent countless hours at Veteran Hospitals in the San Diego area. Any documentation concerning Makeup Artists and Veterans that can be preserved, Mehron would like to preserve this historical record. You may email the Mehron Blog , or send mail or packages to: Mehron Archives, 100 Red Schoolhouse Road, Chestnut Ridge, NY 10977

The Makeup For The Foot Lights

Mehron, Theatrical Makeup since 1927
If timing is everything then deciding to produce Theatrical Makeup in New York City in 1927 was perfect timing. Living just off Broadway, Mehron Melik was in the heart of the birth of the Broadway Theater District that was rising around Times Square. Although New York Theater traces its roots back to 1750 with the establishment of a 280 seat Theater on Nassau Street at the Seaport in lower Manhattan, the creation of a Theater District began in earnest in the early 1900's culminating with the establishment of the grand theaters around Times Square. As Mehron Melik began producing Theatrical Makeup for the New York City Performers in live shows from The Seaport to Herald Square, The Times Square Theater District, what is now referred to as The Broadway Theater District, was about to reach a milestone that would change the face of the Broadway Musical.

On December 27, 1927 at the Ziegfeld Theater, Show Boat, the first musical to completely integrate plot, theme, dialogue and songs to tell the story opened. Based on the 1926 novel Show Boat by Edna Ferber, with Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II providing the music, Show Boat produced by the most extravagant showman of the era, Florenz Ziegfeld opened to the astonished audiences of the time. Known for his Follies and Revues, Mr. Ziegfeld sparred no expense in providing the show with elaborate sets, costumes and makeup. Although originally intended as the opening show for his new Broadway Palace scheduled to open on February 2, 1927 on Sixth Ave and 54th Street at the upper end of the new Broadway Theater District, it was delayed until December. Kern and Hammerstein were not able to polish Show Boat in time to meet the deadline of the opening of the Ziegfeld Theater, the opening show was Rio Rita, which proved to be a hit. The grandiose sets of Show Boat were planned for the new theater but closing a hit was just not done, the Broadway opening of Show Boat was delayed until a new venue for Rio Rita was found.

With Musicals like Show Boat requiring large casts, Theatrical Makeup was in demand. It was men like Mehron Melik who handmade, delivered and demonstrated Theatrical Makeup to the cast members. Performers soon learned the Makeup that was easy to use, lasted without running, did not dry and crack, was the best Theatrical Makeup to use, Mehron Makeup was soon in demand during the late 1920's in the back stage areas of the grand theaters of the day. The demand for Makeup caused by the large casts of so many shows spawned Makeup Companies by the dozens, few survived even till the next decade, Mehron Makeup is the same continuously running Theatrical Makeup Company that catered to the casts of Musicals from the opening of Show Boat.

Now encompassing a Line of Specialized Makeup for Theaters, Clowns, Film, Face Painting, Body Painting, Character Makeup, Special Effects Makeup, Beauty Makeup, Fashion Makeup, and Halloween Makeup, Mehron Makeup traces its foundation to the roots of Broadway. Continuing to produce makeup in the USA, free from animal testing Mehron Makeup is seen on stages around the world from Australia to Zimbabwe. From the Foot Lights of Broadway to the lights of your Makeup Mirror, Mehron Makeup has survived the test of time for over eight decades, and timing is everything.

Her Academy Award nominations came in back to back years, 1978 for An Unmarried Woman, for which she received The Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival, then again in 1979 for Starting Over another comedy with Burt Reynolds as her co-star.

In Lombard, Ms. Clayburgh portrayed film legend Carole Lombard as she continued to exhibit her acting diversity which she studied as a member of the Charles Street Repertory Theater in Boston in the early sixties. Her final film role is scheduled for release on November 24, 2010 as Mrs. Randall in the comedy drama, Love and Other Drugs.

Even Television Audiences know the work of Jill Clayburgh, where she received Emmy Award nominations for her work in Hustling in 1975 and again for a guest appearance in the series Nip/Tuck in 2005. Other Television credits include Law and Order, The Practice and Ally McBeal.

Jill Clayburgh won accolades from the Entertainment Industry during the years 1978 - 1981, when she was nominated for eight significant acting awards including two Academy Awards, and four Golden Globe Awards during this three year span of her decades long career. Throughout her career, Ms. Clayburgh was a hard working actress who put all her effort into each and every role, presenting the complexities of each of the varied characters she portrayed in Theater and on Film. For the last two decades she continued to work and perform despite a constant health battle. As an Actress and a courageous person, mother and wife, Jill Clayburgh will be missed on the stages of Broadway and will live on through the gifted performances that she has left us with in over two dozen movie roles.

To Another Theater

Joseph Stein and Jerry BockIn Memory of Joseph Stein (May 30, 1912 - October 24, 2010) and Jerry Bock (November 23, 1928 - November 3, 2010)

On October 24, 2010, Joseph Stein, an American Playwright departed from the Great White Way. Best known for Fiddler on The Roof and Zorba, Mr. Stein was born in New York City on May 30, 1912, fifteen years before Mehron Melik founded Mehron Makeup off Broadway in the same city. Joseph Stein first wrote a book with the intention of it becoming a Broadway Play at the behest of Richard Kollmar, husband of Columnist and What's My Line? panelist Dorothy Kilgallen, about Pennsylvania ala Oklahoma by Rodgers and Hammerstein, to promote the State. With writing partner Will Glickman, Mr. Stein returned to New York to write Plain and Fancy, about the Pennsylvania Dutch. Plain and Fancy opened on Broadway in 1955 and had a run of 461 performances. Although short lived on Broadway, Plain and Fancy has been performed over 3000 times for an annual production of Amish Acres in Nappanee, Indiana, USA.

Pointed to as his Masterpiece, Fiddler on the Roof won Joseph Stein two Tony Awards. Performed by over 25,000 Theather Production Companies around the world, Fiddler on the Roof is considered the most successful Musical Theatrical Production of all time. Working with Sheldon Harrnick, Jerry Bock (Jerrold Lewis "Jerry" Boch) composed the songs and lyrics for Fiddler on The Roof and appeared as a speaker at the funeral services for Joseph Stein.

Ten days after the death of Joseph Stein, on November 3, 2010, Jerry Bock also departed the Great White Way. Born on November 23, 1928 in New Haven Connecticut, a year after Mehron Makeup was founded, Mr. Bock was raised in New York. Mr. Bock, working in conjunction with Sheldon Harrnick, was responsible for a number of Broadway Musicals including the acclaimed Fiorello, based on the life of former New York City Mayor, Fiorello La Guardia. Mr. Bock was the recipient of two Tony Awards during his illustrious career.

Together, Joseph Stein and Jerry Bock gave Broadway some of its biggest hits. Their work will continue to live on even though they have left the footlights of Broadway for the stars above. Both hailed from New York City, had a passion for the theater, contributed to the life and soul of Broadway and will have the echos of their words heard as long as Broadway lives.

Mehron Makeup offers its sincere condolences to the family and friends of two of the bright stars of Broadway on their passing, Mr. Joseph Stein (May 30, 1912 - October 24, 2010) and Mr. Jerrold Lewis "Jerry" Bock (November 23, 1928 - November 3, 2010).

You Can Use Mehron Body Paint Too!!!

Kelsey Wright Uses Paradise Makeup AQ Kelsey Wright in her Prize Winning Body Painting using Paradise Makeup AQ.

Many people look at the award winning Body Painting presented in the Mehron Blog and on the Mehron Web Site and wonder if they can do it themselves. Kelsey Wright of Tucson, AZ discovered that she could when she decided that her Halloween 2010 Costume was going to be a Body Painting. Ms. Wright chose the female lead in Avatar as her Halloween Character choice and set out to research how she was going to do it. Her first stop was a seasonal Halloween Specialty Shop where the sales clerk pointed her to a wall of makeup, pointing out that the Mehron Makeup was considered the highest quality makeup that they carried, she directed her to Mehron Fantasy FX consumer tubes. Thinking that it would take a lot of consumer size tubes to cover her body, Kelsey decided to contact Mehron directly to see about buying Fantasy FX in a larger professional size.

Using the Contact Us Page on the Mehron Web Site, Kelsey emailed Gene Flaharty, Sales Manager, Artist and Product Expert at Mehron and explained what she wanted to do. In a Telephone Conversation with Ms. Wright, Gene explained that the Mehron Product that was best suited to her needs was Paradise Makeup AQ, the water activated cake makeup that is the preferred choice of Body Painting Makeup Artists around the world. Kelsey was able to locate Paradise Makeup AQ in her home town at The Mehron Authorized Retailer, Creative Costumes, located at 4220 East Speedway Blvd, Tucson, AZ 85712, 520-882-8822.

Kelsey told the Mehron Blog, " The Paradise Makeup AQ which I used to paint my body in "light Blue" for the base coat and "Lagoon Blue" for the stripes was EXTREMELY easy to use. That was one of my favorite things about it, especially since I am a complete 100% beginner at body-painting. All I needed was the Paradise Makeup AQ, a cup of water, and my brush. There were no extra products and the paint dried incredibly fast and DID NOT SMUDGE AT ALL." Kelsy enlisted the help of her mother and boyfriend to reach the parts of one's body that you can not reach yourself, and they were able to apply the Mehron Paradise AQ in a Professional manner even though they have never used Body Paint before. "We simply used a large paintbrush to apply the all over base coat and a smaller angled brush for the stripes."

All her work paid off as Kelsey and her Boyfriend, Armando Salas attended a Halloween Party at the Cactus Moon Night Club in Tucson, AZ and won the best Costume Prize bringing home nearly $300 in cash and prizes. Kelsey was not only proud that her very first Body Painting won a prize but she was amazed at the reception she received, "During the evening when I went out with this costume, I spoke to probably close to 100 people about the paint, and all of them gave me wide eyed looks when they touched it! Half of them weren't even sure how I had done it or what it was!"

How about at the end of the night, is it easy to remove? Kelsey told us, "Yes. The Paradise Makeup AQ was incredibly easy to remove, just as advertised on the package. I just hopped in the shower at the end of the evening and most of it began running off very quickly with water alone. The light blue color washed away easily with water, and the lagoon blue was nearly gone with water alone and completely gone with soap. No special removers were needed, and it did not stain the shower. More importantly, it did not come off until I wanted it to, and stayed on nearly flawlessly through 4+ hours of dancing at a very crowded night club. (the photos I sent you are post-dancing!)"

Mehron would like to congratulate Kelsey Wright on her prize award, thank her for trying Paradise Makeup AQ and proving that you don't have to be a Professional Body Painting Artist to accomplish wonderful Body Art with Paradise Makeup AQ. The Mehron Blog would like to especially thank Kelsey for allowing us to share her story with photos, and very detailed answers. Kelsey Wright provides the answer to the question that is often asked, "Can I use Mehron Body Paint Makeup?"

What's My Line?

E.Y.E. Lashes from Mehron, Innovations in False Eyelashes for decades
What's My Line? was a CBS Network Television Game Show that was on air for twenty-five years. It had many incarnations during its long Television run including adaptations in other countries. A concept of the Producers Mark Goodson and Bill Todman, What's My Line? initially began as a show called Occupation Unknown. Its original run on CBS was from February 1950 - September 1967. There were 876 episodes of What's My Line? produced for CBS and 1315 syndicated episodes for a total of 2191 shows.

Originally hosted by John Charles Daly with a panel consisting of Dorothy Kilgallen, Arlene Francis and Bennett Cerf, the panel at one time included Steve Allen, later to be the host of the Tonight Show. The concept of the game was for the panelist to guess the occupation of the guest. The guest would sign in by name and be questioned by the panelists. The panelists were only allowed to ask questions that would elicit a yes or no response by the guest. With the clues obtained by their interrogation, the panelists had to guess the occupation of the guest, in the case of mystery guests, who were well known stars the panelists had to guess the name of the guest. Because the mystery guests were often recognized, the panel was usually blindfolded for the mystery guest portion of the show. The panel won the game by guessing the occupation or name of the guest before they received ten "no" answers from the guest. In the early days of the show, the guest would win $100 for stumping the panel.

On the 52nd episode which aired on May 27, 1951 the second guest on What's My Line? was a female named Frances Melik, wife of Mehron Melik, Founder of Mehron Makeup. Because the panelists of What's My Line were all involved in the Entertainment Industry, they were all familiar with the name Mehron, the producers therefore decided to use Mrs. Melik for their guest. Even at this time Mehron Makeup had a diverse cosmetic line, the Producers wanted the panel to guess a particular product that Mehron was famous for, False Eyelashes.

Throughout recorded history there are references to and drawings of false eyelashes, however, the modern concept of false eyelashes is credited to American Film Director D.W. Griffith. While filming his 1916 epic, Intolerance, Mr. Griffith wanted his star Seena Owen to have larger than life eyes and decided that extending her eyelashes to the point of brushing her cheeks would accomplish this look. A wig maker was enlisted to weave human hair through gauze that was then glued to the eyelids of Ms. Owen. Mehron became a leading manufacturer of False Eyelashes for the Performance Community beginning in the early years of the company and perfecting the concept in the late 1940's throughout the early 1960's.

Mehron Melik was so proud of his False Eyelashes that he designed and patented a special case that protected his false eyelashes for the end user. When Frances Melik appeared on What's My Line? the Mehron False Eyelashes were used by stars and showgirls alike throughout the Entertainment Industry, most likely the two female panelists were very familiar with and users of Mehron False Eyelashes. Without the Mehron name as she signed in, the panelists of What's My Line? could not zero in on the product and Ms. Melik stumped them taking home the $100 prize.

After years of being out of favor, as fads come and go in the world of beauty and fashion, False Eyelashes are again making a comeback in the world of Beauty Makeup. Mehron Makeup has reached back to the standard of False Eyelashes created by the Founder, and reintroduced False Eyelashes under the name E.Y.E Lashes. Taking False Eyelashes to a new level while maintaining old world craftsmanship, E.Y.E. Lashes are hand made by skilled artisans and designed for a new era of Extreme Beauty Makeup. E.Y.E. Lashes are currently available in six unique looks to highlight eyes, Full, Fuller, Diamond, Diamond Feather, Sparkles and Feather. When handled correctly these new wave E.Y.E Lashes can be used up to ten times, which makes the cost of these dynamic beauty accents highly affordable for everyday wear.

If What's My Line? were still on the air today, the Producers would have a hard time deciding which of the premier cosmetic lines to have their panelists guess if Mehron were to appear. E.Y.E. Lashes are only one of hundreds of Mehron Products available today in a collection that includes Specialty Makeup for Stage and Studio, Face Painting, Body Painting, Air Brushing, Special Effects, Clown Makeup, Dancer's Makeup, and Extreme Beauty Makeup, all of which is available throughout the world at Authorized Mehron Retailers.
