Mehron Makeup for Spencer Tunick

The Big Chill Festival is an alternative, dance, music, comedy and Art Festival currently held at Eastnor Castle in Ledbury, Herefordshire, England and drawing in excess of 30,000 attendees. Commencing every year in early August, the festival was founded in 1994 by Pete Lawrence and Katrina Larkin changing locations throughout the years to accommodate the ever growing crowds. The Big Chill Festival of 2010 was the the site of Photographer Spencer Tunick latest Installation. Mr. Tunick is noted as the photographer who uses masses of nudes to create a group pose at unique locations creating an artistic image that shows the unity of the human form with its surroundings.

The Big Chill Festival Installation of 2010 was a first for Mr. Tuick in a career of firsts. The August 2010 Installation and photograph by Spencer was the first time that he used Body Paint to change the hue of the natural color of the human nude volunteers who pose for his photographs. His intention was to make a statement about the environmental disaster of the BP Gulf Oil Spill in the pristine waters off the coast of the United States. Spencer Tunick Makes a Mehron Makeup Request

Photographer Spencer Tunick is best known for his artistic photographs that feature hundreds to thousands of nudes posed in extraordinary locations. Mr. Tunick was born in Middletown, NY, USA not far from the current New York State Headquarters of Mehron, Inc. Spencer originally began his career of photographing nudes in New York City, the birthplace of his artistic vision and the birthplace of Mehron Makeup. His early photographic endeavors was a juxtaposition of the human body against the stark environment of the urban setting of New York City. Flesh imposed upon concrete, asphalt, brick, mortar, steel dirt and decay. His early work is a more intimate look at the human body in opposition to the environment.

By 1994 Spencer Tunick was gathering groups of nudes to pose in the open environs of cityscape. Soon groups totaling 65 grew into hundreds of nude bodies posing in unison to form a celebration of the diversity of the nude human form at locations around the world. The photographic genre of Mr. Tunick soon became known as "Installations", and required a crew to handle the logistics of hundreds of volunteers posing nude at locations around the world.

Just as the name of Photographer Ansel Adams has become synonymous with Nature Photographs, the name Spencer Tunick has become synonymous with the the group nude photograph. Traveling the world, choosing locations that are historical, natural, unique and plain, Spencer Tunick creates Art by joining the human form with its environment. Unlike the Body Painting Artists who use the Human Body as their canvas, Mr. Tunick has always used the blank canvas of the human body surrounded by the art of the living world. Churning the idea in his mind, Spencer came up with an installation idea that would combine a mass installation photograph of painted bodies to make a statement about the Gulf Oil Spill. The installation came to fruition on August 10, 2010. Mr. Tunick envisioned waves of human nudes painted in colors to represent the Gulf waters, the sky, beach, and sunset along with a wave of black to represent the oil disaster mixing with the pristine colors of the Gulf Environment.

The Big Chill Installation represents the first Spencer Tunick Photograph with painted nude bodies of the volunteers instead of a blank canvas against the setting of the location. To accomplish hundreds of bodies being painted in a timely and efficient manner, Mr. Tunick reached out to Mehron with a Special Request for Makeup. Mr. Spencer needed a Body Painting Makeup that was creamy, user friendly and water resistant. Mehron Met his needs with a formulation that his volunteers could apply without the need to have hundreds of Makeup Artists on Site. Calling on Mehron for help, The Roosevelt Marching Band was not only supplied with the quantity of Blue Liquid Makeup that they needed, they were also given tips and instructions by the Mehron Team on how to accomplish the volume of Makeup Application that they needed to have the Band Members ready in time for the competition.

The 2008 Roosevelt Marching Band from Honolulu, Hawaii has a unique and innovative Marching Band Program. This year the Marching Band presented a program of the blues. Don't get the wrong idea The Roosevelt Marching Band did not start playing the blues, they played in blue! That's right, the 80 plus members of the Award Winning Roosevelt High School Marching used Mehron Makeup to turn their band BLUE.

It was a daunting task for the novice makeup users to turn their 80 plus Band Members Blue, but they did succeed not once but three times as they presented their program at three different events. The reason that the Roosevelt High School Marching Band decided to make themselves blue was their song selection, for their first song they played, "Sketches in Blue", their second number was, "Passions in Blue", and their final number was "Rhythm in Blue".

Besides hours of grueling practice which keeps the Roosevelt Marching Band from Honolulu, Hawaii in demand at major events including New Year's Eve in London, England, this daring group of performers endured hours of Makeup Application in order to carry the Blue Theme through their Performance in not only music but in presentation.

With tips offered by Shelli Farber, Education Manager of Mehron, the volunteers spent hours turning their Band Member into Blue People for their performances at the University of Hawaii Rainbow Invitational, Kamehameha Tournament of Bands and Mililani Bandfest. These enduring Band Members selected Mehron Makeup, the Makeup that has endured performances since 1927.

This amazing group of High School Students who have practiced for countless hours to become a precision marching band, showed remarkable patience and cooperation as novice makeup artists became experts in turning them blue over the course of the three performances.

On August 12, 1939 the Wizard of Oz premiered at The Strand Theater in Oconpmowoc, Wisconsin, USA. August 12, 2010 is the 71st Anniversary of the opening of this trend setting film. The Wizard of Oz as a film was not an immediate commercial success but has endured the test of time and is a milestone in the use of Theatrical Makeup. From Oz to Avatar

In August of 1939 Mehron Makeup was in the midst of its twelfth year of operations. On August 17,1939 at the Lowes Capitol Theater located at 1645 Broadway in New York City, The Wizard of Oz opened only blocks away from Mehron Melik's Theatrical Makeup Company. The Lowes Capitol Theater was a showcase for MGM Film releases in New York City. Attendees of the Lowes Capitol Theater were treated to a stage show along with an MGM release. Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney appeared in the stage show that was presented during the run of The Wizard of Oz at this landmark theater that opened in 1919, one of the few Theater Palaces that predates the foundation of Mehron Makeup.

In 2009, as The Wizard of Oz celebrates the 70th Anniversary of its release, Mehron is entering their 83rd year in the production of high quality Theatrical Makeup. Filmed with an unheard of budget at the time The Wizard of Oz was a Technicolor challenge for the Makeup Artist, Jack Dawn, who would later head the MGM Makeup Department. The Theatrical Makeup Industry was meeting the new challenges presented by Hollywood in the 1920's through the 1930's, men like Jack Dawn and Mehron Melik found their roles interchangeable during this infancy stage of film makeup. Makeup Artist also became Makeup Manufacturers and Makeup Manufacturers were also Makeup Artists. During this time of Makeup experimentation the men who were contemporaries often shared ideas and helped each other solve problems.

Mr. Dawn encountered his share of problems during the extravagant production of the Wizard of Oz including the almost fatal poisoning of the original Tin Man, Buddy Ebsen by the aluminum powder that was used as his makeup for his role as the Tin Man. Mr. Ebsen was mysteriously replaced in the role of the Tin Man by Jack Haley, who like most of the other cast members at the time did not know why Buddy Ebsen was replaced. In consultations with his contemporaries Mr. Dawn came upon the solution to create the aluminum look for the tin man by mixing the aluminum powder with a paste so that Mr. Hailey would not breathe in the dust and become ill in the same way as Mr. Ebsen. It was also suggested that Jack Hailey have a layer of Clown Makeup applied as a foundation to protect his skin before the application of the aluminum paste that Mr. Dawn had created after consulting with other Makeup Men throughout the country. Unlike 2009 when Shrek the Musical needs a particular green for their favorite Orge, all they did was call Mehron and have it made, the Makeup Inventors of 1939 found and made their own makeup solutions.

An American axiom that rings true for the Film Industry is that necessity is the mother of invention. Seventy years after the creation of the American Film Classic, The Wizard of Oz, James Cameron needed to invent technology in order to put his vision on film. Avatar, scheduled for release in December 2009 will be the first fully three dimensional film ever released. Tired of waiting for three dimensional film technology to catch up with his vision, Mr. Cameron invented his own three dimensional camera equipment to finally film the idea that has been in his mind for fifteen years. Avatar is already being proclaimed as the new milestone in film making, just as seventy years ago, The Wizard of Oz raised the bar of achievement in the industry, in 2009 Avatar is expected to do the same.

Meagan Hester, Key SPFX Makeup Artist and Character Art Director for the soon to premier Independent Film When Bobby Met Larry written and performed by Carlos A. Gonzales, shared the list of Mehron Makeup products that she used to create the five main characters of the film. As a diverse Makeup Artist, Ms. Hester is familiar with all the Mehron Makeup Products and although this film did not call for using one of her favorite lines of Mehron Makeup Products, she did use a cross section of Mehron Makeup. In a recent interview, Meagan Hester related "I especially love the Mehron Blood Makeup for FX work". Although When Bobby Met Larry required her to use a lot of her makeup skills, it did not require using Performance Squirt Blood, Stage Blood, or Coagulated Blood Gel, but with Halloween on the horizon and the Vampire Age upon us, Meagan will surely be using these Mehron Products in the near future.

For the Characters of When Bobby Met Larry, a Production of SugarCamp Films, Meagan Hester used a variety of Mehron Makeup to transform Carols A. Gonzalez into five distinct characters. Ms. Hester used her Makeup Artistry to change the age, sex, and race of Actor Carlos A. Gonzales for his roles in the film, When Larry Met Bobby, Directed by Phil Coccioletti with Assistant Director Jessica Hester.
