The Passion Play, Vernoica's Veil

Few productions in the Theatrical World have been around longer than the Theatrical Makeup of Mehron. The Passion Play, at one time billed as Veronica's Veil, is the story of the last days in the life of Jesus Christ. Originally performed by parishioners of St, Joseph's Church in their auditorium, Veronica's Veil was an in house Parish Production that was recognized as a significant theatrical event worthy of coverage by Time magazine as long ago as 1934. In the Time Magazine feature section entitled, Religion, with a dateline of February 26, 1934, the Passion Play, then called Veronica's Veil was already being applauded as an American Institution, "A salesman named Leonard Mathews has been Caiphas the High Priest for twelve years. Tall Paul Mallon, 22, jeweler's clerk, plays Christus. He is the only actor who speaks no lines. Costumed by women of the parish, paid nothing for their work, the cast of Veronica's Veil rehearses three months every year, goes into a retreat to prepare spiritually for the 25 performances. As "America's Passion Play" opened its 630th presentation last week it was estimated 1,000,000 people from all parts of the world will have seen it before its current run closes."

Across the Hudson River in 1934 Broadway productions opened and closed on a regular basis, and since then thousands of productions have drawn their final curtain in the shadow of Union City, NJ, home to America's longest running Theatrical Production. Mom's in the shower, now is the perfect time for a seven year old girl to sneak into her Mother's room, quickly uncap the blush, scrape some into a bottle cap that doubled as her makeup mixer, smooth the blush back to hide the fact that some was missing and await her turn in the bathroom. Once inside the bathroom, the seven year old creator mixes the "borrowed" blush with just enough Vaseline to create a glossy colored home made lip gloss. Covering her newly manufactured Lip Gloss with a saved piece of aluminum foil, she retreats to the sanctuary of her room and secrets it away in her coat pocket for transportation to school the next day. When the morning comes and the seven year old Makeup Manufacturer is safely in the confines of the school yard, she reaches into her pocket, uncovers her personally made lip gloss and gingerly applies it using the school door glass as her makeup mirror.

For a while the plan works perfectly, until........Teacher meets the Mom and mentions that she is the only seven year old who comes to first grade with Lip Makeup. The Mother is confused at this revelation by the teacher as she knows that not only doesn't her daughter have any makeup, she is also forbidden to wear it. As the daughter reveals the plot to her Mother, a Mother realizes the that her daughter has a drive and talent that shouldn't really be punished. The Seven Year Old had dreams of being a singer, not a Makeup Artist as one would imagine. A classically trained pianist from a musically inclined family, the first career for Vicki Starr was as a singer. Not thrilled with the Makeup that the Makeup Artists assigned to her Performances would do for her, Vicki began tinkering with her own Makeup until she perfected the look that she wanted. Vicki recently explained to the Mehron Blog, "Dreams of being a Makeup Artist came later on as a result of bad makeup that was put on me by others who didn't know how to deal with my complexion so I ended up doing it myself. The History of the Masquerade Ball can be traced back as far as the 15th Century Italian Renaissance. The "first" Masquerade Balls were actually public festivals that were predominately popular in Venice. These public "Masquerade Balls" were the forerunners of Carnival Celebrations. In the 15th Century, the Venetian Aristocracy favored the Masquerade Ball for all sorts of lavish celebrations including weddings. The popularity of the Masquerade Ball swept through all of Europe by the 17th and 18th Centuries even making it to Colonial America.

Masquerade Balls became the setting for Operas, Gustave III an Opera by Daniel Auber and Eugene Scribe tells the story of the assassination of Gustav III of Sweden by a disgruntled nobleman. In literature, The Edgar Allan Poe short story, The Mask of the Red Death, is set at a Masquerade Ball with the inevitable Poe turn of events. The Mask of the Red Death was eventually adapted into film in 1964 starring the master actor Vincent Price. The German Author Hermann Hesse also includes the Masquerade Ball in his epic novel, Steppenwolf.

Masquerade Balls have never disappeared but the popularity of the Ball faded in the nineteenth Century. In the 1990's in North America the Masquerade Ball saw a resurgence. Hamlet at the Met

The musical adaptation of Hamlet makes its first appearance at the Metropolitan Opera since 1897. Composer Ambroise Thomas’s opera version of Hamlet will be at the Met for six performances starring Simon Keenlyside and Marlis Petersen, who was thrust into the role of Ophelie when Natalie Dessay had to withdraw from the role only days before the opening due to illness. Ms. Petersen flew in from Germany, where she was wrapping up an engagement in Medea at the Vienna Opera House. With only three days rest, Ms. Petersen, the ultimate professional studied for her new role in Hamlet while packing to fly to New York. While rehearsing on stage with full orchestra, the Costume Designers and Makeup Artists were deciding on the appropriate costumes, wigs and makeup for their new lead in an Opera that had already completed its final dress rehearsal. The first live performance will be the first time that even the Producers, Patrice Caurier and Moshe Leiser will see the full Production in costume because of the late arrival of their new lead, Marlis Petersen.

The Clowns

Clowns are noted in historical records throughout the history of civilization. The art of clowning has taken on many forms throughout history. Some clowns actually affected political policy as they played the role of court jester to Rulers and Kings. Because they were seen as amusing buffoons, Jesters and Clowns were often allowed more freedom of speech than others and were in many cultures the only ones who were able to criticize an authoritarian despot. Jesters and Clowns would often speak out criticizing political policy and influencing the Rulers and Kings to reverse course. By using buffoonery and sarcasm, Jester or Clown would make decrees and laws appear stupid, planting the seeds of change in the mind of the Dictator or King.

The look of the Jester and Clown changed with the times, by the Sixteenth Century the White Face Clown is already noted in historical records. The look European White Face Clown evolved into an almost sophisticated appearance with well tailored "Jester" clothing. William Shakespeare was aware of the importance of the Clown, using the Clown character to speak the lines that would be political suicide if spoken by any other character, similar to the Comedians of today that can criticize politicians and political decisions without any uproar and repercussions

As freedom of political criticism became more available to everyone the clown continued to evolve in other ways. The 2010 Oscar Winners for Makeup
