The Champs Have Been Decided

Sunday January 23. 2011 was Championship Sunday in the USA for American Football, The National Football League (NFL) Divisional Championships were played in two outdoor stadiums in the coldest weather of the Season. The Green Bay Packers, hailing from Green Bay Wisconsin outlasted the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field in Chicago, IL to become the National Football League Conference Champions. The Pittsburgh Steelers held off the surging New York Jets at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, PA to capture the American Football Conference Championship. Both games were played in temperatures that that never went beyond 17 degrees Fahrenheit, yet NFL Football Fans sat through the battles, most were bundled up beyond recognition, but Television Cameramen did capture shots of die-hard fans in Face Paint and Body Paint in in the frigid weather.

The Green Bay Packers will now meet the Pittsburgh Steelers in Cowboy Stadium located in Arlington, Texas, USA for the ultimate NFL Trophy, The 2011 Vince Lombardi Super Bowl Trophy. Throughout the year the Mehron Blog will feature Makeup Artists whose dedication to their craft and use of Makeup deserves a spotlight be shined on them. Tonight the Mehron Blog features the work of Mark Greenawalt. Mr. Greenawalt, like a lot of talented Makeup Artists dabbles in a variety of Artistic pursuits including photography, film, and music. At the 2009 AEMI World Bodypainting Festival in Shanghai, China Mark Greenawalt took the second place trophy back home to The Ahwatukee Foothills of Phoenix, Arizona where he currently resides.

Using copper LUX Airbrush Makeup by Mehron, Mark Greenawalt recreated a statue of a little mermaid by body painting a live model. This body painting of the little mermaid and others enabled him to place second in the 2009 AEMI World Bodypainting Festival in China.

Looking for a New Career?

With layoffs continuing at a record pace, many people find themselves out of work in their chosen profession and accepting work in any field just to earn an income. Others take their layoff as an opportunity to pursue a different avenue in life by returning to school to master a new profession. With a downturn in advertising, graphic design artists are especially hard hit along with writers and photographers. Makeup from Oz to Avatar

In August of 1939 Mehron Makeup was in the midst of its twelfth year of operations. On August 17,1939 at the Lowes Capitol Theater located at 1645 Broadway in New York City, The Wizard of Oz opened only blocks away from Mehron Melik's Theatrical Makeup Company. The Lowes Capitol Theater was a showcase for MGM Film releases in New York City. Attendees of the Lowes Capitol Theater were treated to a stage show along with an MGM release. Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney appeared in the stage show that was presented during the run of The Wizard of Oz at this landmark theater that opened in 1919, one of the few Theater Palaces that predates the foundation of Mehron Makeup.

In 2009, as The Wizard of Oz celebrates the 70th Anniversary of its release Mehron is entering their 83rd year in the production of high quality Theatrical Makeup. In 1939 the Wizard of Oz was a ground breaking event in the world of film, from the Special Effects to the Makeup, The Wizard of Oz established loftier goals for the Movie Industry. In 2009, seventy years after its New York City release, The Wizard of Oz remains a timeless movie classic. Filmed with an unheard of budget at the time The Wizard of Oz was a Technicolor challenge for the Makeup Artist, Jack Dawn, who would later head the MGM Makeup Department. The Theatrical Makeup Industry was meeting the new challenges presented by Hollywood in the 1920's through the 1930's, men like Jack Dawn and Mehron Melik found their roles interchangeable during this infancy stage of film makeup. Makeup Artist also became Makeup Manufacturers and Makeup Manufacturers were also Makeup Artists. During this time of Makeup experimentation the men who were contemporaries often shared ideas and helped each other solve problems.

Mr. Dawn encountered his share of problems during the extravagant production of the Wizard of Oz including the almost fatal poisoning of the original Tin Man, Buddy Ebsen by the aluminum powder that was used as his makeup for his role as the Tin Man. Mr. Ebsen was mysteriously replaced in the role of the Tin Man by Jack Haley, who like most of the other cast members at the time did not know why Buddy Ebsen was replaced. In consultations with his contemporaries Mr. Dawn came upon the solution to create the aluminum look for the tin man by mixing the aluminum powder with a paste so that Mr. Hailey would not breathe in the dust and become ill in the same way as Mr. Ebsen. It was also suggested that Jack Hailey have a layer of Clown Makeup applied as a foundation to protect his skin before the application of the aluminum paste that Mr. Dawn had created after consulting with other Makeup Men throughout the country. Unlike 2009 when Shrek the Musical needs a particular green for their favorite Orge, all they did was call Mehron and have it made, the Makeup Inventors of 1939 found and made their own makeup solutions.

An American axiom that rings true for the Film Industry is that necessity is the mother of invention. Seventy years after the creation of the American Film Classic, The Wizard of Oz, James Cameron needed to invent technology in order to put his vision on film. Avatar, scheduled for release in December 2009 will be the first fully three dimensional film ever released. The Challenge Of The Future for Makeup Artists

John Cameron's Avatar is touted as the future of cinema. Scheduled for release in December, Avatar will be be a 3-D. The John Cameron version of 3-D will be different than the occasional object flying at the audience. The entire screen will be 3-D throughout the entire movie. With technology lagging behind his vision, John Cameron took it upon himself to develop the camera equipment necessary to present his cinematic version of a 3-D film. Last Day of Bodyssey in Toronto, Canada

Today April 5, 2009 is the last day of Bodyssey, a convention of the Body Painters Community. On the final night the theme for the final party is Alien Invasion, with a convention attended by the world's top body painters and Body Painting Fans there is sure to be some of the most creative looking aliens that have ever invaded earth.

On March 11, 2009 the Mehron Blog featured the Airbrush Artistry of Cheryl Vaughn. Cheryl was chosen by Mehron to showcase the introduction of LUX Airbrush Makeup by Mehron at the Halloween Costume Party Convention, Las Vegas, NV, held on March 6-9, 2009 . Like any other Profession sometimes the person finds the Profession and sometimes the Profession finds the person, Cheryl Vaughn is one of the latter.

Cheryl did not begin as a Makeup Artist, she began working as an airbrush artist creating T-Shirts in the Florida Panhandle in 1981. Moving to Las Vegas with her husband and four daughters Cheryl dedicated her time to the tasks involved with nourishing the lives of four daughters putting her artistic abilities to use by helping to create a haunted house Halloween Spooktacular for their school year after year. As the Halloween Spooktacular progressed through the years, Cheryl became more interested in creating the spooky characters with makeup rather than painting the set.

Las Vegas is the annual setting for the Halloween Costume Party Convention and in 2001 Cheryl attended the convention with a friend and saw airbrush makeup being applied for the first time, it was at that moment that she knew a Profession had come to her. With her love of Halloween Makeup and her talent as an Airbrush Artist she suddenly saw her future as an Airbrush Makeup Artist specializing in the creation of characters.

Cheryl Vaughn, Airbrush Artist, found a job doing Airbrush Face Painting for Star Costume in Las Vegas and continued attending the Halloween Costume Party Convention where she met Gene Flaharty, Mehron Artist & Product Expert. Mehron was in the process of perfecting Lux Airbrush Makeup and was planning on the public release at the 2009 Halloween Costume Party Convention. Cheryl was asked to demonstrate Lux Airbrush Makeup at the 2009 Convention and she not only demonstrated the use of Lux Airbrush Makeup, she created the most beautifully scary characters at the 2009 Halloween Costume Party Convention using Lux Airbrush Makeup.

"What I noticed right away about the LUX line was the quality of the colors! They are so pretty. The models were laughing because as I painted a Zombie or Skeleton, I kept exclaiming about how pretty the colors were, I absolutely loved the Brown!." Cheryl told the Mehron Blog in an interview after the 2009 Convention.
