Phil Nichols, an award winning Special Effects and Design Artist, along with his sister Melissa Nichols are co-owners of Facades FX, Makeup Lab and Creature Designs. The Nichols through their "Monster Lab" have created thousands of Special Effects Characters using a combination of FX Makeup and Design specialities. On this day when Mehron is once again participating in the Tunnel to Towers Run in New York City, NY, which commemorates the bravery of Firefighter Stephen Siller and all of the 342 Firefighters who gave their lives on September 11, 2001 in an effort to save those trapped in the towering infernos, The Mehron Blog presents a widely read blog from September 30, 2008 titled:

Tunnel to Towers Run - NYC, NY

On Sunday September 28, 2008 the 7th Tunnel to Towers Run took place in New York City, NY. The Tunnel to Towers Run follows the path that off duty Firefighter Stephen Siller took on the morning of 9/11/01 when he ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel towards the engulfed World Trade Centers to assist in the rescue operations. Stephen was driving to meet his three older brothers when he heard the news about the World Trade Center. He turned his car around and drove towards Manhattan. He was stopped at the Entrance to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. Not to be deterred, the young father of 5 young children, hauled his 70 pounds of firefighting equipment over his shoulder and ran over 3 miles to the Twin Towers. A few hours later Stephen Siller, Husband, Father of 5, Brother, Uncle, Firefighter, Hero, was among the 342 New York City Firefighters who never came back from that tour of Duty.

In Honor of Stephen Siller and all of the 342 New York Firefighters his Family organized a Living Memorial to commemorate his short life. The Tunnel to Towers Run which follows in Stephen's 9/11/01 footsteps from Brooklyn to the Twin Towers raises funds for The Stephen Siller/FDNY "Let Us Do Good" Children's Foundations.

Shelli and her volunteers painted countless faces and then donated their "tips" to another very giving person, Deva Prem, who is a face painter from Brooklyn, NY. Deva is suffering from cancer and treatments are very costly. In the midst of her own tribulations, Deva uses her innate skills and unique artistic imagination to paint the heads of cancer patients who have lost their hair due to treatment.

To the Siller Family, Mehron thanks you for letting us be a part of this Living Memorial in commemoration of the 342 New York City Firefighters who answered the alarm on 9/11/01.

What is Hypoallergenic Makeup?

We are often asked the question, "is your makeup hypoallergenic?". Although we don't label our Makeup hypoallergenic, we do believe that a large majority of people will be able to use our Makeup without an allergic reaction because we use quality ingredients and standardized formulations in the creation of our Makeup. The FDA does not have a definition or a standard for labeling Makeup as hypoallergenic because of a Supreme Court Ruling that removed the burden of proof from the manufacturers.

Any person can be allergic to an ingredient, but we strive to use only ingredients that are known to have a very low risk of an allergic reaction. Makeup Companies that label their Makeup hypoallergenic are doing so as a marketing tactic, the same amount of people can be allergic to Makeup that is labeled hypoallergenic as those that use a Makeup that is not labeled as being hypoallergenic. This leaves the consumer as the final judge of the Makeup that they buy. The Key to buying makeup that will not cause an allergic reaction is to buy a Makeup that is produced by a Company that believes that the well being of their customer is of the utmost importance.

Face Painting

Throughout recorded History references to Face Painting can be found, from the Phoenicians through the Native American People of North America. Various cultures used Face Painting in different ways and for different purposes. A primitive form of Face Painting was camouflage, used by hunters to blend into their surroundings, catching their prey off guard. The recorded History of such People as the Babylonians, Mayans, and ancient Egyptians give us clues as to the various metamorphosis that Face Painting took through the centuries. Some Face Painting was ritualistic, some for hunting and still others for beautification. Crude Face Painting was accomplished with mud, progressing into plant dyes and colored rock dust mixed with animal fat to create an early form of "Grease Paint" Makeup. Warriors used Face Painting not only as a camouflage but also as a symbolic gesture for the blessings of the gods that they may have a successful hunt.

References to using colors on the face to enhance beauty can be found in the Phoenician history along with the Bible, Egyptian written history and archaeological relics. Face Painting seems to be an innate human endeavor, the human race has used Face Painting for celebrations, survival needs, religious ceremonies and theatrical pursuits. The 2008 Roosevelt Marching Band from Honolulu, Hawaii has a unique and innovative Marching Band Program. This year the Marching Band presented a program of the blues. Don't get the wrong idea The Roosevelt Marching Band did not start playing the blues, they played in blue! That's right, the 80 plus members of the Award Winning Roosevelt High School Marching used Mehron Makeup to turn their band BLUE.

It was a daunting task for the novice makeup users to turn their 80 plus Band Members Blue, but they did succeed not once but three times as they presented their program at three different events. The reason that the Roosevelt High School Marching Band decided to make themselves blue was their song selection, for their first song they played, "Sketches in Blue", their second number was, "Passions in Blue", and their final number was "Rhythm in Blue".

Besides hours of grueling practice which keeps the Roosevelt Marching Band from Honolulu, Hawaii in demand at major events including New Year's Eve in London, England, this daring group of performers endured hours of Makeup Application in order to carry the Blue Theme through their Performance in not only music but in presentation.

With tips offered by Shelli Farber, Education Manager of Mehron, the volunteers spent hours turning their Band Member into Blue People for their performances at the University of Hawaii Rainbow Invitational, Kamehameha Tournament of Bands and Mililani Bandfest. These enduring Band Members selected Mehron Makeup, the Makeup that has endured performances since 1927.

This amazing group of High School Students who have practiced for countless hours to become a precision marching band, showed remarkable patience and cooperation as novice makeup artists became experts in turning them blue over the course of the three performances.

During the first year of the Mehron Blog, one of the most widely read posts concerned Austin Davidson, an active duty U.S Army Serviceman, who because of 9/11/01 was serving in Iraq. Austin has a creative mind and used his downtime to plan and construct a character that he named Reptile-man. Austin Davidson shared his story in a letter to Mehron. From the Archives of the Mehron Blog, here is Mr. Davidson's story, first posted on November 13, 2008, titled, A Soldiers Tail:

Mehron recently received an email from Austin Davidson, an active duty U.S Army Serviceman who came up with a costume idea while deployed. He wrote to tell Mehron about his experience using Mehron Makeup to create his costume that he calls Reptile-Man which he thought about and planned during his deployment. U.S. Army Serviceman Austin Davidson definitely takes costuming seriously. You can watch the video that Mr. Davidson made titled "A Day in the Life of A Reptile-Man". His Letter Begins:

"To all the Good People at Mehron,

I just wanted to thank you all for helping me create a great costume for Halloween this year and last. Here are some photos of the finished products. Last year, I heard that your products were the best, so I ordered enough to cover my costume. I was so impressed; I bought and applied about $300 worth of your makeup this year. It was worth every penny compared to the stuff I have used previously.

I made the costume myself and don't have any make-up or FX training. My full time job is serving in the U.S. Army. I came up with the idea while deployed, and decided to start making it downrange. I made every horn out of clay, the tail out of plumber's pipes, and the body with fish netting, duct-tape, liquid-latex, and a ton of paint."

8th Annual Tunnel to Towers Run

On September 27, 2009 at 9:30 AM, in Brooklyn, NY a Commemoration of the Heroes of 9/11/01 takes place in the form of the Tunnel to Towers 5k Run/Walk that traces the steps of Firefighter Stephen Siller on that fateful morning. On 9/11/01 Stephen Siller was an off duty New York City Firefighter on his way to a day off with his brothers. Hearing the call of duty, Firefighter Siller ran from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center Site to assist his the on duty Firefighters in their Herculean effort to save the victims of a devastating attack. Stephen was last seen at the site of the World Trade Center as were so many of the First Responders who answered the call of 9/11/01.

To honor the Memory of Firefighter Stephen Siller the Tunnel to Tower Run was organized as a Charitable Foundation that contributes to a variety of Children's and Survivors Charities. The Tunnel to Tower has grown exponentially over the last seven years donating to a host of charities to commemorate the Memory of Son, Brother, Husband, Father and Firefighter Stephen Siller. Those not able to travel to Brooklyn, NY for the race, may still participate in the final goal of the race, donating money to The Stephen Siller "Let Us Do Good" Children's Foundation.

The Tunnel to Tower 5K Race/Walk ends with a day of festivities that include Children's activities. Mehron endorses and supports the work of the The Stephen Siller "Let Us Do Good" Children's Foundation.
