Featured Artist - Mark Reid

Mark Reid, MasterBody Painter

Is a person born to be an Artist or does life create them into an Artist? In the case of tonight's Featured Artist, Mark Reid, Master Body Painter, it seems to be a combination of both. Mark Reid has either pursued Art for his entire life, or it has pursued him. Beginning as early as five years old, Mark Reid had a desire to create Art. At age 10 Mark was taking formal lessons using charcoals and paints. Coming from the wide open spaces of New Mexico, Mark's imagination had plenty of room to roam. The journey from canvas artist to Body Painting Artist might at first blush seem unusual, it is not unusual at all. Like most Body Painting Makeup Artists who took their Artistic abilities displayed on the woven fabric and transferred their visions to the human body, Mark Reid took a similar route.

In Dallas, Texas Mark Reid encountered Judy Kubik, who along with Melanie Seidsma were conducting a class in Face Painting "This was the turning point in my career.", Mark recently told the Mehron Blog. Turning his Artistic Talents to Face Painting with Makeup, Mark quickly mastered the use of Makeup to create living Art. 2004 was a pivotal year in the transition from Mark Reid, Artist, to Mark Reid, Master Body Painting Makeup Artist. Marcela Murad asked Mark Reid, Artist to do some paintings for her Magazine, adding that she would also like a Body Painting. The Artist in Mr. Reid could not turn down this opportunity even though he had not yet done a Body Painting with Makeup. Mark recently recalled this time in an interview for the Mehron Blog., "She also asked me to do a body painting. I had no idea how to go about asking a woman to take her clothes off to do this and my girlfriend refused to let me do it. I wanted to be in this magazine so bad, I had to sneak around and did the body painting on a friend. It was the greatest experience. I fell in love with it and my girlfriend left me.......".

With a talented, challenge seeking artistic soul, Mark Reid was enthusiastically absorbing the Art of Body Painting, turning out inspirational living art. Although Body Painting is an Artistic endeavor, like all Artists, the Body Painting Makeup Artist must find a way to make a living at it if they are to continue to have the freedom to pursue and perfect their Art. Mr. Reid often took on commercial Body Painting jobs and was asked to work for a Production Company in Dallas, Texas who were responsible for an event called, "Body Art Ball" Tour. Mark accepted the challenge but was startled by a phone call before the event from one of the Producers who told Mark that they would like him to paint, "jeans" on models at the Ball. Not wanting to turn the job away, Mr. Reid told the Producer that painting jeans would not be a problem. Mark tells it as, "I accepted and a week later they called and asked if I had ever painted jeans. I lied and said "Of course, I can paint great jeans." I immediately called a friend and had her come over. I painted her twice until I got it down and since then I have painted over 200 pair of jeans." Mark Reid has become a specialist in Body Painting Jeans with Paradise Makeup AQ.

Attending the 2004 Face and Body A International Convention in Orlando, FL, Mark met the President of Mehron Makeup, Martin Melik. During their conversation Mr. Melik complimented Mark's work and and offered him some Paradise Makeup AQ to try. Mark recalls this meeting, "Mr. Melik gave me some Paradise Make Up AQ to work with and I really liked it. I have been using it ever since and have promoted it all over the world." Mark has remained a friend, and an independent Mehron Makeup Artist representing Mehron Face Painting and Body Painting Makeup at Seminars, Conventions and Competitions around the world, along with using Mehron Makeup in his personal work and as an Instructor. As a Body Painting Instructor, Mark believes that Paradise Makeup AQ is the Professional Body Painting Makeup that students in his classes need to become familiar with in their quest to perfecting their Body Painting skills. "Being an Instructor, I find that it is easier to teach with Paradise Makeup AQ as it is easy for my students to use. As an Artist and competitor, they have a great selection of colors that allow me to be as creative as I want. The consistency of this make-up is perfect. Not too creamy, it blends perfectly with a sponge or brush and I get great lines using it."

Along the road to becoming a Master Body Painting Makeup Artist, Instructor and continuing to be an Artist that works on canvas, Mark Reid sought the challenge of producing a World Class Annual Body Painting Makeup Convention and Competition in North America (NABPC). 2010 saw this dream fulfilled as Mark Reid put together the First Annual North America Body Painting Convention in Las Vegas, NV, USA. Drawing the attention of Body Painting Makeup Artists, Models, Photographer and Makeup Companies from around the world, the first ever NABPC was a great success. "I was very happy with the turnout as we had almost 90 people from all over the world competing.". As a Producer, Instructor, and Body Painting Makeup Artist, Mark has an affinity for Competitive Body Painting Events, not just because he can channel his internal inspiration and the world that he perceives but also because, "Getting to paint next to someone from another country and making friends is priceless. It is not about winning for me. Once we show up and make a new friend and get inspired by someone's style or learn a new technique makes us all a winner. In 2008 I placed first in the preliminaries in Seeboden. For 2 days I was number one in the World.........I can live with that!"

Live with it he does, Mark Reid continues to blaze new trails in the Art of Makeup Body Painting as an independent Body Painting Artist, who continues to do, "Corporate Promotional events and private body paintings. I can be contacted at markreidart@aol.com or 469-235-3936", while instructing in the art of Face and Body Painting, competing around the world in Competitions, and exhibiting paintings on canvas available for sale in Philadelphia at Musher-Lovelund Studios.

Mark feels that Body Painting Art will continue to develop and grow just as it has for centuries, although he enjoys the freedom to travel to events around the world in pursuit of the Art of Body Painting, he realizes that traveling and crossing time zones constantly begins to wear on the body, time and the freedom to create. He says that he will be involved for the rest of his life in this Art that he loves, but hopes to settle into a routine and establish a School for Body Painting Art where the students will come to him and he will spend less time in the air and more time with a Body Painting Makeup Brush. He plans on continuing to perfect NABPC and looks forward to its continued growth, hoping that each year it is held will affect the lives of Artists and guide them to love the Art of Body Painting with Makeup.

For the next few years at least, look for Mark Reid at Face Painting Makeup and Body Painting Makeup Conventions, Seminars and Competitions around the world as both a seasoned Master Body Painting Makeup Artist as a teacher of the craft.

Beauty launchpad, Mehron, and Toni

Mehron and Toni Francesc Fashion Week revisted by Beauty launchpad online
Beauty launchpad Magazine is the magazine for Professional Makeup Artists and Stylists, it's web site offers online exclusives not published in the magazine. In a Beauty launchpad online exclusive writer Karie L. Frost recalls the February 2011 Fashion Week collaboration between Mehron Makeup and Designer Toni Francesc in presenting his Fall 2011 Collection. In a captioned pictorial retrospect Ms. Frost uses pictures by Richard Esposito to bring the reader closeup to the Makeup Application of Lead Makeup Artist Jackie Mgido who led the Mehron Makeup Artist Team in this Fashion Week Challenge. Toni Francesc uses a thematic approach to present each of his collections at New York Fashion Week and February 2011 was no exception. To present his 2011 Fall Collection at New York Fashion Week, Mr. Francesc used the myth of Garuda as the basis for his designs.

Ms. Frost uses a quote from Makeup Artist Jackie Mgido to summarize one of the photos and the the juxtaposition of Mehron Makeup with the theme of the Toni Francesc Collection. "For the eyes, we wanted to create a dramatic look that also represented the bird,” says Mgido. “I used Mehron Feather E.Y.E Lashes to create this look, along with Black Onyx E.Y.E Powder and Slate Grey E.Y.E Cream blended on the lid to represent the ashes.” Mgido further defines the wing-like shape using Mehron Black Detailz liner."

Bolder Brighter Eye Makeup

Mehron Detailz in Beauty launchpad magazine
On page 94 of the July Issue of Beauty launchpad, a Creative Age Publication, the magazine for Professional Beauty Makeup Artists and Stylists, writer Karie L. Frost in her brighter Hue Feature pages writes about a "Brighter Gaze". In this feature Ms. Frost discusses the new trend in brighter eye makeup with Makeup Artist Maria C. Scali. She relates that the days of safe eye makeup color choices like, black, brown and navy are gone. Today Eye Makeup is a rainbow of colors, including colors that were never thought of for eyes like yellow and orange. Ms. Scali explains that if Makeup Artists have clients that are bit skeptical of the new bright colors, which make eyes look brighter and younger, you can ease them into it by applying just a pop of color in the corners, and expand as they feel more comfortable.

Mehron Makeup Artist have been doing this for years with Detailz, the liquid detailing makeup from the Paradise Makeup Collection. Originally developed for Face and Body Painting makeup Artists, Detailz is now a staple among Beauty and Fashion Makeup Artists, as well as Face and Body Painting Makeup Artists. In face, Jinny, the First Lady of Face Painting, has been using Detailz for years in her dazzling eye makeup applications, creating what has become known as Extreme Beauty Eye Makeup.

Detailz is exactly what Karie L. Frost point to in her feature called, "Brighter Gaze", as part of her Only Hue Feature in the July 2011 Issue of Beauty launchpad magazine. Her features has a nice close up of the Detailz Bottles of Yellow and Orange along with the free fine tip application brush that is attached to each Detailz Top. You can see exactly how this fine tipped applicator will give you control over the Detailz of your new exciting eye makeup look. Although Ms. Frost shows the Yellow and Orange colors of liquid Detailz and their fine tip application brushes, there are more daring color choices for you to experiment with in the Detailz liquid makeup selection.

Detailz currently comes in the traditional black plus eleven other detailing colors to enhance and brighten you eyes. Even the Black of Detailz is not your everyday black, all Mehron Makeup is highly pigmented producing a true rich vibrant color that comes with over eighty years of experience producing Theatrical Makeup for Stage, Studio and Screen. With the Detailz fine tip applicator a little goes a long way, with the color expertise of Mehron, no need to worry about the color changing because you have had it so long, the rich, vibrant, dazzling colors that you buy are the same colors you will be applying months later from the same bottle.

Karie L. Frost highlights Mehron Detailz Yellow and Orange as an exciting twist to achieve youthful eyes with non traditional eye color, with Detailz you can also try the seductive colors of Silver, Gold, Purple and Red, or the innocence of pink and teal. The Twelve colors of Detailz will give you endless possibilities for accenting your eye makeup to achieve a brighter gaze that is only you.

Mehron Launches Again

Mehron Recommended in Beauty launchpad Beauty Magazine
As the Space Shuttle finishes its final mission, no longer will it be poised on the launchpad ready to blast off to new frontiers. Such is not the case with Mehron Makeup. As Mehron Makeup continues to formulate and develop the newest in Beauty Makeup Products and Colors here on earth, they once again find their creations on the launchpad. Beauty launchpad, a Creative Age Publication, is the magazine that Professional Beauty Makeup Artists and Hairstylists turn to to see what the newest trends, colors and makeup products are taking off in today's fashion world.

In the July 2011 issue of Beauty launchpad Magazine, writer Karie L. Frost highlights Mehron Fashion Makeup Products in her feature Only Hue. On page 92 of the July Issue of Beauty launchpad, Ms. Frost discusses the makeup look that twenty five million households see each week on American Idol. The deep bronze skin tone of Jennifer Lopez, highlighted and accented by bold, lively bright lip colors. Karie L. Fisher suggests that Makeup Artists can achieve this same look for their clients even if their skin tone does not have the natural bronze base like J.Lo. Ms. Frost points out to the Professional Makeup Artists that read her feature, that Aura Bronzing Gel is a choice for Professional Makeup Artists and their clients.

A recent Mehron addition to the Beauty Makeup Collection, Mehron Aura Bronzing Gel is a lightweight bronzing gel that can be used all over the body, even the face, that mimics the look of a day in the sun without the harmful effects. In fact Mehron Aura Bronzing Gel has a super hydrating, skin smoothing base made with Lemongrass, Ginseng, Chamomile, Comfrey, Cucumber, Aloe Vera, and Japanese Green Tea with a generous blend of bronzing shimmer that produces a seductive bronze glow. Aura Bronzing Gel can be used alone or mixed with Celebré Pro HD Make-Up for a look that even Ms. Lopez will envy. Aura Bronzing Gel paired with the amazingly vivid colors and hues of Mehron L.I.P. Cream, the look that Karie L. Frost is highlighting in her Only Hue feature in the July Issue of Beauty launchpad, can be a look that is Only You with Mehron Beauty Makeup.

Mehron Helps With Prison Therapy

Applying Mehron Makeup in a Prison Acting Workshop
In these tough economic times businesses of all sizes are feeling the pinch. Social Programs that depend on the charitable contributions of others are really hurting, and programs that are funded by State Budgets has been closed. Early in 2011 Martin Melik, President of Mehron, was contacted by Sabra Williams, Director, The Actors' Gang Prison Project. Ms. Williams explained that funding cuts had decimated a thriving project that was bringing arts into the prison, specifically an acting workshop. When the State of California cut the funding for the Arts-in-Corrections Program the final curtain was about to close on the work that The Actors' Gang Prison Project was undertaking at the prison in Norco, California. The Artistic Director of the Actors' Gang, Actor Tim Robbins told prison officials that the shows would go on, that they would continue with private funding and donations.

Enter, Sabra Williams contacting Martin Melik. Ms. Williams explained to the President of Mehron that throughout the years The Actors' Gang had always used Mehron Makeup, that it was an essential part of reaching out to the inmates through the Commedia dell'arte workshops of the Prison Project. After hearing her plight and pinching the budget in other areas, Mr. Melik freed up enough to fulfill the donation request of The Actor's Gang Prison Project sending them Gallons of Whiteface, ProColorRing™ Bruise, Application Sponges, Paradise Makeup AQ, Color Cup, Zombie Flesh and Setting Powder.

The Actors' Gang Prison Project
The Actors' Gang Prison Project is an interpretation of Drama Therapy using Commedia dell'arte, a technique favored by Tim Robbins to enable people to reach into their inner emotions in preparation for playing characters. It is a form of theater that was in favor in Italy in the 16th and 17th centuries, an improvisational performance that often occurred on outdoor stages and relied on props instead of formal scenery.

The Actors' Gang Prison Project states on it's Web Site:

"Arts programs have proven to stem the tide of violence. Dr. Lawrence Brewster, Sociology Professor at California State University at San Jose, found that prison Arts In Corrections programs reduced incidents of violence within the prison by 75-81% and saved close to double the cost of the program in measurable benefits such as security and medical costs. Later it was proven that the program lowered recidivism rates by 51%.

Theater has therapeutic aspects built into its process, which leads to discipline, self-examination and working with others of different backgrounds. In addition to nurturing communication skills and creativity, the program builds individual self-respect. For some, this confidence motivates them to overcome difficult backgrounds and set previously unimaginable goals, such as going to college. The process provides an opportunity to work with peers of different races and gang affiliations, thereby bridging their differences. The result raises social consciousness, imparting the sense that they are woven in a social fabric and each one is part of a larger whole."

The Actors' Gang Prison Project is one of only two left in the State of California, the other has had to do the same and raise their own funds to keep their program alive. Mr. Robbins and The Actors' Gang hope not only to be able to keep their program alive, but to expand it to other prisons with private donations.

On June 30,2011, The New York Times published an article by writer Adam Nagourney who witnessed Mehron Makeup in action when he went to visit the Actor's Gang Prison Project in Norco, Ca. Mr. Nagourney got a first hand look at Sabra Williams and Tim Robbins conducting their workshop. The Actors' Gang Prison Project was also covered by NPR Radio, BBC and The Los Angles Times. Mehron was there to help this time, but may not always be able to help especially if the program expands as is the hope of Director Sabra Williams, and Actor Tim Robbins. You can donate to the Actor's Gang which not only does prison outreach, they also do Community Theater, Bring Theater into the Schools and have a host of other projects to keep the arts alive. You can donate to The Actor's Gang through their Web Site, 75% of their budget is from donors like you, Actors, Theater Owners, Makeup Artists, Producers, Directors, Drama Professionals, and all those involved in the arts.

Theatrical Makeup as a Therapy

Mehron Professional Theatrical Makeup

The elements of Theatrical Therapy traces a long and winding road back in history to the time of Aristole and beyond. As the man who coined the word "catharsis", Aristole acknowledged the emotional cleansing that acting could have. Like an early form of Psychodrama, a method of psychotherapy where role playing and acting out are encouraged to reveal inner emotions, Aristole realized that Theatrical Performing was a form of emotional exploration. In 1925, Jacob Levy Moreno moved to New York City from Romania and began to pursue his theories of psychology which led to the implementation of Psychodrama as a formal therapy. After presenting his theories to the American Psychiatric Association in 1932, Dr. Moreno spent the next forty years in New York City refining his approach to therapy, which included, Theatrical Therapy, Group Therapy, Psychotherapy, and Psychodrama while holding positions at Columbia University and the New School for Social Research. Before his death in New York City in 1974, Dr. Moreno wrote his own epitaph which reads, "The Man who Brought Laughter to Psychiatry".

Arriving in New York City in 1925 and continuing to live and work there until his death, Dr. Moreno bore witness to the rise of New York City as the theater capital of the world. Walking the same streets as Mehron Melik, who was during the same time becoming a part of the New York Theater Scene by founding a Theatrical Makeup Company, Dr. Moreno was probably influenced by the live performances that permeated New York City at the time. His marriage of acting and therapy consumed his life, and became the passion of his second wife Zerka Moreno who has become the foremost authority in the field of Psychodrama, which continues to evolve.

Drama Therapy is the child of Psychodrama and uses theater to explore personal growth and mental health. Now widely accepted throughout the world because of the foundational work of Jacob and Zerka Moreno, Drama Therapy has been used in schools, mental health centers, prisons and even business development. Practiced around the world, Drama Therapy includes full scale Theatrical Productions that includes, Sets, Costumes, Theatrical Makeup and Audiences.

The theory is that by role playing (acting), a person will expand their view of emotional situations and deal with them as the character that they are playing, thus enabling them to see and feel the different approaches of dealing with the emotional complexities of life. The more successful programs of Drama Therapy are able to give their clients the full Theatrical Experience including Professional Theatrical Makeup, well constructed sets and live audiences. In the public sector, Drama Therapy Programs are suffering greatly due to a lack of funding, in US Prisons once thriving Drama Therapy Programs are almost non-existent. Other programs in schools, addiction centers and metal health facilities have gone back to almost a group therapy experience where role playing without the benefit of a Stage, Professional Theatrical Makeup, Costumes, Sets and Audiences have become the norm. A Mental Health discipline that has had much success is now fading due to a lack of funding in the public sector.

Selling worldwide franchises to Marie Claire for publication around the world in each country's native language, the US edition of Marie Claire was begun by the Hearst Corporation. Heat Wave and Makeup

Protect Your Makeup In A Heat Wave
Even the quality manufactured Makeup of Mehron can't withstand the heat of a hot car in a heat wave. With temperatures across the US surpassing one hundred degrees Fahrenheit, the interior of a car parked with the windows up can approach one hundred and fifty degrees Fahrenheit in no time. Of course everyone knows not to leave animals in the car, and neither should you leave makeup in the car at those temperatures. The extreme heat of the summer heat waves can effect your makeup. Makeup Artists running from job to job and doing errands in between should be aware of how long you are going to leave your makeup kit in the car or trunk. Your Makeup Kit is your livelihood, don't leave a Makeup Kit in the car while you do errands. You may think that you will only be a few minutes, but what if it's longer. Your makeup could be melting while you are waiting on a line you thought would be shorter.

Not only Makeup Artists who have a lot of money tied up in their supplies have to be aware of the extreme heat of heat waves, everyone should be aware of leaving makeup in a car that is parked and will soon heat up to an oven cooking temperature. Everyone has seen the news reporters cooking eggs on sidewalks and car dashboards while reporting on the heat waves, if the heat can cook an egg, it can cook your makeup. Lipstick, Cream Foundations, Eyeshadow, Eyeliners and even lip pencils can melt in extreme heat, don't take the chance, take your makeup with you. Even if you always leave Makeup and Makeup Kits in your car, these extreme heat waves are not the time to take chances. Protect your Makeup investment by keeping it out of the extreme heat.

Clowns, Face Painters and Body Painters who often leave everything in the car between jobs, should be aware that these are not normal hot days, these are extremely hot days, you don't want to risk cooking your makeup. It may take a bit more time and work to empty your Clown Makeup or Face and Bodypainting Makeup from your car or van, but it is worth saving your makeup. The last thing you want to do is arrive at next week's job and discover that your Makeup Palette has melted and re-hardened to form a new makeup shape.

Restock Paradise

Restock Your Paradise Makeup AQ Colors

This is the busy season for working Face and Body Painting Makeup Artists, freelancing at fairs, carnivals, circuses, amusement parks, boardwalks and now if kids nights at restaurants. If your lucky enough to get an indoor gig, you are lucky, most summertime days for working Face and Body Painters means working outdoors, or at best under a three sided tent with maybe a fan. No matter, it is steady work for now. Yes the days are long, hot and sometimes annoying, but you're earning money doing something you love.

After those long hot days it's easy to just pack up your makeup and make a mad dash to the car or bar, sit and relax in air conditioning and forget about tomorrow until it comes. Unlike winter, when jobs are not an every day event, you might be blowing through certain colors of your Paradise Makeup AQ quicker than you suspect. Even though the day is long, right before you pack up after cleaning your brushes and storing them away take stock of your stock. See if their was a particular color of Paradise Makeup AQ or Paradise Detailz, or Paradise Glitter that you used a extra lot of that day. Maybe there were a lot of turtles today and your Paradise Makeup Amazon Green is low, or lions and your Light Brown Paradise Makeup AQ is low. Take a minute to see what you need, you don't want to open up one day and not have the colors you need, besides being a long day it might just turn into a whining day if you can turn them into what they want when they sit down at your Face Painting Station.

While your stocking up on your Paradise Makeup AQ colors don't forget to take a look at the newest hues in Paradise, NUANCE, the newly developed hues of Red, Yellow, Blue, Deep Sea Skin, Green Orange and Purple by Jinny, The First Lady of Face Painting. Add Nuance to your Face Painting Booth, with the hues of NUANCE, the newest colors of paradise.
